Can personal care homes really be all that good?

To be sure, there are people who’ve had less than stellar experiences of personal care homes. But let’s be honest. There are also people who’ve lad less than stellar experiences of licensed facilities, too. So what’s really the issue?

My wife Melissa created The Home at Baer Creek because she experienced first-hand the devastation brought about by government licensing and regulation in assisted living facilities. During COVID, two things became very clear. One, government has nearly total control over licensed facilities. Government said, “Lock the joint down,” and facilities did. Residents became inmates, and many died alone. The other thing that became clear is that when the **** hits the fan, family comes first. Facilities struggled to maintain staff. Facilities demanded longer hours, extra shifts, and employees were literally faced with choosing their job or their family. And in many cases, family won…and the “inmates” in facilities  (and their families on the outside) lost.

We opened The Home at Baer Creek with a very different model. We’re a family. In my experience, many personal care homes are run by retired medical professionals, and they’re run like small hospitals. They feel cold. They feel sterile. Are they in a house? Yes. They’re technically “residential” assisted living. Are they really a home? Not even close.

We’re different. Our model is different. And we teach, coach, and mentor our heart-led caregiver clients differently. The next time government tells its license holders to go on lockdown, they will. But here, you’ll still be able to come into our home and be with your loved one. And our employees don’t have to choose between job and family because we invite their family into ours. Rather than focus on compliance with licensing regulations, we focus on creating excellence in senior care through love, honor, integrity, and family. And by the way, we operate at or above licensing standards.
